Roses:
- Spending a day with The Spouse, The Teen and The Dog going through the Valley of Fire, and meandering along dirt roads through southern Nevada and Utah to get back home.
- Hearing that potential health problems with a loved one are somewhat resolved.
- Starting to plan another roadtrip ... nothing gets me as energized as preparing for a get-away. I will be spending almost 3 weeks over Christmas making my way from Utah to northern Florida, up to Carolina Beach, North Carolina, and then back to Utah. The Teen will be on her own Christmas adventure, and The Spouse will be maintaining the homefront, so I will be solo. Check back later December (if not before) to follow my travels.
- Finishing The Lovely Bones by Alice Seebold ... one of the best books I have run across in a long time. Really beautiful. Hopefully the upcoming movie version will do it justice.
- Getting my Secret Santa partner at work ... I love planning little surprises for others ... and making it even better is that the person I ended up with is one of my favorite people at work. The first gift I am leaving for her is a batch of Reisen chocolates and hand-made Christmas gift tags, all bagged up in purple netting.
- A Thanksgiving spent with The Teen and The Spouse, two at the top of my Most Thankful For list. Dinner was Marie Callendar Turkey Pot Pie and root beer floats for dessert.
- Finishing one little cross-stitch project (except for attaching the ribbon hanger) for a co-worker that is having a baby, and starting on another ... a bright bookmark using hand-dyed aida cloth and variegated floss.
- Coffee with a friend I haven't seen in too long.
- Going through photos from the last couple of years and enjoying the memories they bring back.
- Warm, fluffy blankets to wrap up on the couch with to stay warm now that winter is arriving.
Thorns:
- All the commercials for the Holiday season stressing the importance of spending a lot of money on crap no one really needs. Along with that are the jewelry commercials that tell us the only way for a man to really show you how much he loves you is to buy you a piece of jewelry ... they make me want to throw up.
- Mean people ... especially those who are old enough to know better, and pride themselves on being upstanding members of their church.
- Trying to volunteer at the Loaves and Fishes soup kitchen two days a month just to be told that I have to sign a paper stating that I agree with the doctrine of the church that is running it or they won't let me help. Sometimes I am amazed at the obstacles organizations put in place when they rely so much on volunteers and donations.
